Learning of how to figure a percentage gives you an insight into figuring percentages numbers in a quicker way. Remember, Percentages are always figured out with reference to some number. Your first job is to identify the reference number. This reference number becomes denominator in percentage formula. After this, we take ratio of both the numbers with reference number as denominator. This ratio is reduced to lowest terms and then multiplied by 100 to calculate the percentage.
Figuring Percentages – Example1
Suppose there are 36 males and 48 females students in a class room. What percent of male students with respect to female student is studying in the class?
Solution:
Here we have to calculate percentage of male students (24) with reference to female students (36). So number of female students will become denominator. Now apply percentage formula or take ratio of two numbers with number of female students (48) as denominator. This ratio will be 36/48. Reduce to lowest terms (3/4). Now multiply with 100 for figuring percentages.
100 x ¾ = 75%
How to Figure a Percentage? – Example2
Suppose there are 36 males and 48 females students in a class room. What percent of female students with respect to total students are studying in the class?
Solution
Here we have to calculate percentage of female students (48) with reference to total students (36 + 48 = 72). So number of female students will become denominator. Now apply percentage formula or take ratio of two numbers with total number of students (72) as denominator. This ratio will be 48/72. Reduce to lowest terms (2/3). Now multiply with 100 for figuring percentages.
100 x 2/3 = 66.67%
