For how to compare decimal numbers, first of all, identify three parts of the decimal numbers. Remember, any decimal number has following 3 parts:
- A decimal point
- Part to the left of the decimal point (left part)
- Part to the right of the decimal point (right part)
This is illustrated as follows:
While comparing decimal numbers, following two situations may arise:
- Left part of decimal numbers is different
- Left part of decimal numbers is same
How to compare decimal numbers?
(When left part of decimal numbers is different)
In such case, Decimal number with larger left part shall be greater
Example
How to compare decimal numbers 3.4863 and 5.2674?
Solution
While comparing decimal number 3.4863 with 5.2674, we observe that in left part of both the decimal numbers, 5 is greater than 3, so decimal number 5.2674 is greater.
How to Compare Decimal Numbers?
(When left part of decimal numbers is same)
When left part of decimal numbers is same, ignore decimal point and think right part of the decimal numbers as a whole number. Then decimal number with greater right potion shall be greater.
Example
How to compare decimal numbers 82.5271 and 82.5371?
Solution
In this example left part in both decimal numbers is same (82). Now ignoring decimal point, think right part as a whole number and compare 5271 with 5371. Certainly, 5371 is greater than 5271. Thus decimal number 82.5371 is greater.
This is how to compare decimal numbers easily.
